Position: Postdoctoral Researcher - Medicinal Chemistry & Chemical Biology

Department: Cancer Drug Development

Code number: 2024-0138

The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

In the Cancer Drug Development group, we are interested in the synthesis and biological evaluation of novel chemical entities for use in cancer research and treatment. For the advertised position, we are seeking an experienced organic chemist to design and synthesize PROTACs against a specific protein target in an internal collaboration project.

Job description:

The synthesized substances will be biologically characterized in our collaborator's department at the DKFZ, which has specific expertise regarding this therapeutic target. Biological experiments can be conducted by the candidate themselves or by members of the other department, dependent upon the desire of the candidate (training will be offered). Regardless, the candidate will largely perform complex organic synthesis, but also dive deeply into cancer biology topics. Day to day tasks will entail detailed reading of the literature, planning, execution, optimization and analysis of multi-step reaction sequences, presentation of results in group meetings and conferences, writing of grant proposals and publications and supervision of students/technicians.

Requirements:

  • Highly motivated and creative individual with a PhD or related experience in synthetic organic chemistry
  • Ability to work on mg or multi-gram scale
  • Experience in retrosynthetic analysis, Schlenk technique and standard means of purification (chromatography, crystallization, distillation, HPLC)
  • Experience in analyzing NMR (1D and 2D) and MS spectroscopic data
  • Applicants with additional experience in biochemistry and chemical biology (e.g. enzyme kinetics, cell culture, gels, blotting techniques) are also desired
  • Ability to clearly communicate ideas verbally and at the white-board
  • Very good knowledge in verbal and written English

Your application should include a CV with publication list, two references, a brief summary of your past research and a copy of your Master's (or most recent degree) grades.
